☀️ Is your front door sticking or hard to lock in this heat? ☀️
If you’re having to lift the handle extra hard or pull the door toward you just to turn the key, you aren’t alone. The recent hot weather does a number on uPVC and composite doors.
Here is what’s actually happening:
The Expansion Effect: PVC and composite materials naturally expand when the sun beats directly on them. Even a few millimeters of swelling can throw the delicate alignment of your multi-point locking system completely out of whack.
The "Ghost" Jam: Often, the door will stick badly in the heat of the afternoon but open perfectly fine by morning once it cools down.
The Risk: Forcing a stiff handle or key puts massive pressure on the internal gearbox. If you force it too hard, the mechanism can snap, leaving you securely locked out (or locked in!).
How to protect your door right now: Don’t force it: If it feels tight, stop.
The shade trick: If it’s safe to do so, keeping a porch door or nearby window shaded can help keep the surface temperature down.
Cool it down: Diping a cloth in cold water and wiping down the outside frame can sometimes give you enough temporary shrinkage to get it open smoothly.
