Have UK Lock Standards Changed in 2026?
Can Your Doors Be Secured When It Matters?
Several UK lock and door-security standards have recently been updated.
But does this mean your existing locks are suddenly unsafe or need replacing?
In most cases, no. A new standard does not automatically make an older lock unsuitable.
However, it is important to understand what modern security markings mean when choosing a replacement or upgrade.
Lock cylinder standards
The new BS EN 1303:2026 standard covers lock cylinders, keys and master-key systems. It assesses areas including durability, corrosion resistance, key security and resistance to attack.
You may also see cylinders carrying a TS 007 star rating. This specifically relates to enhanced protection against attacks such as snapping, drilling and manipulation.
A three-star cylinder provides the highest TS 007 cylinder rating and can offer a worthwhile security upgrade for many uPVC and composite doors..
Does an older cylinder need replacing?
Not necessarily. An existing cylinder may still provide effective protection even if it was certified under an earlier standard.
An upgrade is worth considering if:
- The cylinder projects beyond the handles
- The key or handle is becoming difficult to operate
- The lock has been damaged or attacked
- You have recently moved home or lost a key
- Your insurer requires a particular security standard
- Your door has only a basic euro cylinder
Problems with uPVC & composite doors are not always caused by the cylinder
Worn hinges, poor alignment or a failing multipoint mechanism can also make a door difficult to lock.
A proper inspection can identify the cause and may allow the door to be repaired instead of replaced.
PAS 24 applies to the complete door
PAS 24 is often mentioned when discussing door security, but it applies to the complete ‘doorset’ – including the frame, locks, cylinder, handles, hinges and glazing.
Fitting a high-security cylinder can improve an existing door, but it does not independently make the whole door PAS 24 certified.
